RA Podar College is starting a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) in shipping & logistics. Principal Shobana Vasudevan said their alumni from shipping industry mentioned there is a dearth of skilled candidates. “Mumbai boasts of a long coastline and we also have ports here. Very few colleges in the country are offering a programme at undergraduate level,” she said, adding that their programmes have an industry ‘guardian’.
Several colleges will offer a B Sc in data sciences – a field that is picking up in the global job market. Even as AICTE introduced it two years ago as an emerging course in engineering, a BSc can be a more affordable option. “Not just affordable, this will be for three years, as opposed to four years of engineering. Students can start work or use the time to complete a masters,” said SIES College principal Uma Shankar.
NM College will start a BCom in economics and a BCom in economics & analytics. “It is important for commerce students to learn economics and its impact on industries,” said principal Parag Ajgaonkar. The institute seeks inputs from alumni in designing the curriculum.
St Xavier’s College, known for its BA and B Sc programmes, will offer BAF from this year, a popular course from an employment perspective. The college currently offers a traditional BCom course only in the evening. Jai Hind College had started a BBA (industry integrated) programme last year in collaboration with Tata Consultancy Services, which will enable students to pursue careers in banking, financial services.
BK Birla College, Kalyan, added a range of industry-oriented bachelors’ courses, starting from event management to integrative nutrition an & dietetics and several BVoc courses in line with the Centre’s push for skill-oriented programmes, said principal Avinash Patil.
A senate member, however, said Mumbai University needs to monitor curriculum and fee structures of these courses by autonomous colleges.
